Fourth Carpathian Convention Working Group Meeting on Sustainable Transport

On 1-2 October 2013, a further meeting of the Carpathian Convention Working Group on Sustainable Transport was convened in Vienna, at the Vienna International Centre. The meeting was organized by the Interim Secretariat of the Carpathian Convention (ISCC), supported by UNEP Vienna, in strong collaboration with the European Academy of  Bolzano (EURAC) and its Vienna Office.

It was the follow-up meeting to the previous meetings organized in Kosice October 2012 and in Vienna February 2013 and June 2013, that provided very fruitful discussions with regards to the draft text Protocol on Sustainable Transport to the Carpathian Convention.

In its meeting in Vienna, the Working Group agreed on a final draft version of the Protocol on Sustainable Transport which will be circulated by the ISCC with the Parties with the view to submit it to the Carpathian Convention Implementation Committee (CCIC) for its consideration for the forthcoming fourth meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP4) to be hosted in Czech Republic, 24-26 September 2014.

During the meeting, the Working Group has been also informed about the updates of the ACCESS2MOUNTAIN project  and about upcoming relevant meetings and initiatives related to sustainable transport, tourism and mobility.

In particular, the initiatives and updates of the Infra Eco Network Europe (IENE), which this year has a special focus on the Carpathians, have been presented together with the draft programme of the next Scientific Workshop on Mountain Mobility and Transport (SWOMM) 2013. The SWOMM, organized in the frame of the ACCESS2MOUNTAIN project, will be held on 11 December in Vienna at the Vienna International Centre and will be an occasion for the exchange of experiences in development, decision making and implementation of sustainable mobility solutions ans measures between the Alps and the Carpathians.
